Planting Garlic For Matariki

Matariki
For Matariki we planted garlic in our school garden. Our gardening teacher helped us. Two people went at a time to do digging and raking and fertilising. We broke the garlic bulb into cloves and got a few each. I said my hands smelt like my Dad's garlic pasta.

How To Plant Garlic:
  • We buried it 5 cm deep under the dirt. You had to put the pointy end of the garlic clove facing upwards and the flat bit where the roots come out at the bottom.
  • Garlic should be planted April to August.
  • Well work the soil with rakes and shovels, until its nice and loose. Plant in a sunny position in the garden to produce more bulbs next year. Leave the papery skin on each clove.
  • Plant the garlic 5-6 cm apart.
  • Make trenches to plant them in.

What a great thing to do for Matariki.
Are you doing anything else in your class for Matariki?
Who else is in your photo working in the garden?
